Colonel
John Devlin, U.S.A.A.F., had chased glory in three wars but it had always
passed him by. Now, in the savage air battles over war-torn There
and then Devlin decided that his top gun was going to be his ticket to glory
… regardless of the cost in men and machines! |
Like
the famous musketeers of old, the four young Second World War German pilots,
fresh from training, believed in the motto, "All for One and One for
All!" It
stood them in good stead on their early combat patrols, while their Focke
Wulf Fw 190s were still the scourge of the skies. But they were to need their
light-hearted comradeship even more in the dark days that lay ahead for the
German Luftwaffe. |
Officially
they were called Forward Air Controllers, but air pirates was nearer the
mark. What else would you call pilots who sneaked about over the Vietnamese
jungle tops, ambushing the enemy from the air then withdrawing before he had
time to retaliate? Roy
Armour was one of these men. He flew with a secret unit based in |
Transferred
from the army to the air force in the very early days of war in the air,
Austrian Karl Littman began to wonder if his fighting days were over - all he
seemed to do was fly boring patrols. His observer did all the shooting and
that was from a very safe distance. So
Karl decided to liven things up and really make the sparks fly. Unfortunately
he was a bit too successful and it began to look as though he was the one
who'd get his wings clipped - permanently. |

It's
said that the helicopter came of age as a weapon during the Vietnam War.
Hauptmann Karl Emberg of the Luftwaffe's Kestrel Staffel might dispute that,
though. For, in the dying days of And
those fierce battles were child's play compared to the fight to destroy
another fleet of helicopters intended as the ultimate Kamikaze force … |
The
Japs were advancing closer by the second, notching up victory after victory.
And the lives of a few stranded R.A.F. lads were in the hands of one of their
own - a bloke who felt he didn't have the nerve to sit in the cockpit of an
aircraft ever again. With
time running out fast and the situation growing more desperate by the second,
somehow the others had to convince their reluctant pilot that he still had
the courage and confidence to take to the air again! |
Frank
Fletcher was the First Officer on a B.O.A.C. "Empire" class flying
boat when the Second World War broke out. He thought that it would be his
Spitfire-flying brother who would see all the action that would come the
family's way. He
couldn't have been more wrong - and his lumbering unarmed airliner would
prove a prickly problem for the Luftwaffe. |
"To
slow," said the Mustang pilots. "Like a carthorse," grinned
the Spitfire boys. "Excellent! Give us more!" enthused the Soviet
ground-attack aces. All
were talking about the same aircraft - the Bell P-39 Airacobra. And this is
the story of some of the men who flew Killer Cobras into battle - in the
savage skies to the east of |

The
Operation
"Baltic" would be a dangerous business, all right… |
From
the first day it arrived in Korean skies, the F-86 Sabre was the boss of the
air war over that country. Only the Russian MiG-15 could come close but it
was still outclassed. Then,
without warning, entire formations of Sabres began to disappear without
trace. It was clear that they were being lost in combat - but what sort of
enemy weapon had the power to cause such a fatal contact? |
It
was a small island in the seas off In
1942, such stories were dismissed as hocus-pocus, yet the crews of four
fighting craft from |
Flying
straight and level over hostile territory sounds like suicide. But that's
what photo-reconnaissance crewman like Captain Mike Sedowski of the U.S. Army
Air Force did, day or night. Mike
could handle all the enemy flak and fighters. They didn't worry him at all.
But now, on the most important operation of his life, he had a new crewman
who he wasn't sure he could rely on in a tight spot - and that really did
worry him. |

six-engined jet bomber, bristling with guns, and with a top speed approaching
the sound barrier … against a wooden glider with only a pair of 30mm cannon.
Sounds like no contest doesn't it? Not
to Hauptmann Kaspar Theiss, it didn't. When he turned his little glider after
the big bomber, he was determined he could bring it down … and settle an old
score. |
Despite
his father being awarded medals for gallantry, Hud Brown just scoffed and
called them "Tin Badges". But
he and his brother Jake found out such medals were fitting badges of the

He had taken to the air as a
fighter pilot in a Supermarine Spitfire, one of the finest combat aircraft
ever, and he proved to be a natural pilot with a rising tally of kills to his
name. But one day Danny Crabbe fell victim to enemy fire, and his injuries
meant he was not considered fit to fly fighters again. Stuck behind a desk, he did
all in his power to get back to any kind of flying and his chance finally
came. This time he was in the cockpit of a Westland Lysander, stooging low
and slow over occupied |
